In her own words
Fatima Guzman
After I graduated from High School I had to wait 4 years to be able to continue my education since I did not have a legal status that would allow me to continue so as soon as I obtained my work permit I decided to continue with my education. I decided to continue studying because I want my mom to be proud of me and that all that sacrifice she made as a single mother was worth it. The road has been difficult but I want to make the most of the opportunity to have the help of Pittsburgh Promise because thanks to them today I can be in a college since my mother as a single mother found it very difficult to support me in my studies by paying lawyers and the high costs of immigration applications leave us living day to day and only saving to pay for those applications fees and paying each month’s attorneys’ fees. Because as an immigrant I have experienced humiliation, discrimination for not having a legal immigration status and a university degree. Because I have also seen the need in my Latino community and the health system in this state and I have the desire to help my community and contribute to the dream of a better country. I thank God and the opportunities for help like this that are provided to students like me, I wish that God would bless the lives of each person who make this possible.
