In her own words

Sylvia Ximena Porras

As a Hispanic woman and the daughter of immigrant farmworkers, my pursuit of higher education is both deeply personal and purpose-driven. I am currently earning a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University, building on my undergraduate studies in International Business and Economics with a minor in Spanish from New Mexico State University. This path reflects my commitment to creating opportunities in underserved communities like the one I grew up in.

My professional journey has taken me from Sandia National Laboratories, where I supported projects driving New Mexico’s economy, to ReImagine Appalachia, where I advocated for economic development in rural Appalachian states. These experiences have solidified my passion for crafting policy solutions that uplift marginalized communities and foster inclusive economic growth.

Beyond academics and work, I volunteer with the Women of ALPFA, where I help create empowering spaces for Latinas in Pittsburgh. I believe that when women are equipped with education and leadership opportunities, we uplift entire families and transform communities.

This scholarship represents more than financial support , it embodies a shared vision of equity, access, and progress. With this support, I will continue working to expand access to education and opportunity, so that more women can lead, thrive, and redefine what’s possible.
